Description :
NYU Data Services is seeking a Java developer on a termed contract basis to work with Research and Instructional Technology and Digital Libraries Technology Services to upgrade the Geoserver instance underlying our spatial data repository, a service we provide to NYU researchers. The developer will work with these teams to develop, upgrade, and document our research repository infrastructure that supports spatial data.
Under the guidance of our Senior DevOps Engineer and Senior Research Data Engineer, the developer will work to upgrade the Geoserver system that helps serve spatial data for our Spatial Data Repository, which is built on the Ruby-on-Rails based GeoBlacklight platform. The developer will upgrade our existing instance of Geoserver, ensuring that the updated system properly functions on AWS and integrates fully with the GeoBlacklight system.
Required qualifications:
- Comfortable with Linux command line utilities and standard Git best practices.
- Experience cleaning and optimizing data in various forms.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience standing and maintaining a Geoserver instance
- Familiarity with Geospatial metadata, Geospatial files (shapefile, geodatabase, Lidar data..)
- Prior experience in code reviews, providing bug fixes and support.
- Ability to efficiently document workflows and train staff, as needed.
- Ability to collaborate with the GeoBlacklight Community.
- Ability, experience, and desire to work in a hybrid/remote setting.
- Bachelor's Degree or higher.
- 2+ years of prior experience as a web app developer or similar position.
- 2+ years' of prior experience developing applications with Java and Maven based applications (Geoserver experience ideal).
- Experience deploying to the Cloud environment (AWS preferred). Understanding of core services (EC2, S3, RDS or equivalents).
- Understanding of PostGIS or similar frameworks.
