What I have noticed is that in order to assess candidates for true work they have done, we probably can look to explore how candidate handled different situations in their projects to understand the thought process. People usually knows PM concepts if there profile is presented for the role. In our case it will be preferred that candidate has experience of managing projects in more traditional fashion, before transitioning into scrum master role, as organization is yet not completely moved to Pure Agile models. Since it’s a mix bag situation, knowing typical PM work is important before scrum, because that’s foundational to basics for our need. If candidate is good in management, but has not worked on Agile projects it’s fine for me.
- We probably should look to ask, how they did all this and dig little deeper in these areas. What problems they faced, etc.
- Project Kick-offs
- Stakeholder engagement
- Risk & Change Management
- Project plan / RACI / RAID, etc.
- Collaboration in multi-vendor environment
- Collaboration across multiple client teams and business
- Collaboration with peer project managers with interdependent deliveries in a release
- Speak up to project status in different forums
- Resource allocation, Timelines control
- Budget management in terms of project size (estimates)
- Proficiency with tools like MPP, Sharepoint, Excel, Powerpoint, Rally,
Experience working in different life cycle models (Waterfall, iterative, scrum, etc).
- Strong communication
- Ability to articulate ones point effectively. Most important
