Job Description:

This role is focused on bringing structure, consistency, and scalability to a complex data landscape spanning newsroom content, commerce, and digital platforms.

 

The organization already operates on Databricks + Unity Catalog with a strong engineering team in place. The priority is to establish clear data architecture, modeling standards, governance, and operating discipline to support analytics and AI at scale.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Data Inventory & Unification:

• Lead the inventory and consolidation of data assets across commerce, newsroom content (articles, video, images), and research domains
• Establish a clear, enterprise-wide understanding of available data and its relationships

 

Data Modeling, Taxonomy & Ontology

• Define conceptual, logical, and physical data models across domains
• Develop and implement taxonomy and ontology frameworks to support analytics and AI use cases
• Standardize structures and relationships across fragmented data products using both traditional and emerging AI-powered approaches (e.g., LLM-assisted taxonomy mapping, semantic enrichment, and automated classification) to support analytics, search, personalization, and AI consumption

 

Data Governance & Quality

• Leverage data governance frameworks to define standards for data ownership, metadata, lineage, provenance, and quality to improve consistency and reliability of data
• Establish onboarding and readiness criteria for new data assets
• Improve consistency and reliability of data across domains

 

Implementation Partnership

• Work closely with the Databricks data engineering team to operationalize data models, governance standards, and processes
• Translate architectural designs into implementable patterns within the lakehouse environment
• Ensure alignment between governance, modeling, and platform capabilities

 

Stakeholder Engagement

• Partner with leadership and key stakeholders across newsroom, content, and commerce teams
• Align data architecture and priorities with business needs and use cases
• Facilitate decision-making and drive adoption of standards

AI Enablement

• Ensure data foundations support AI use cases by improving structure, consistency, and quality
• Address challenges such as incomplete or inconsistent data that can impact AI outputs
• Support the development of data assets that are fit for AI and advanced analytics

 

Required Qualifications:

 

Experience & Expertise:

• 10+ years of experience in enterprise data architecture, data strategy, or data management consulting
• Proven track record designing and implementing:
  • Data models across complex, multi-domain environments
  • Data governance, metadata, and data quality frameworks
  • Taxonomy and/or ontology structures
• Experience working across both structured and unstructured data domains

 

Technical Skills:

• Strong experience with Databricks, including Delta Lake, Unity Catalog (metadata and governance), Data product and pipeline structures within a lakehouse architecture
• Advanced SQL skills
• Familiarity with Python or Scala
• Experience with data modeling and transformation tools (e.g., dbt or similar)

 

Solid understanding of:

• Lakehouse/data platform architectures
• Metadata management and lineage
• Data observability and quality monitoring

 

AI & Modern Data Concepts

• Familiarity with data requirements for AI/ML (quality, structure, consistency)
• Exposure to semantic modeling, knowledge graphs, or ontology tools is a plus

 

Preferred Experience

• Media, publishing, or digital content environments
• Commerce or product data ecosystems
• Experience in federated or decentralized data environments
• Background in consulting or systems integration

 

In compliance with the salary transparency law, the expected pay range for this role is $60 - 70/hr. Actual compensation depends on experience and interview evaluation.
